Laboratory experiment has been undertaken with regards to the role of Polyacrilamide (PAM), in nutrient
absorption. Preliminary results of leaching studies showed that the amount of N leached was significantly
reduced by the application of different rates of polymer in both sandy loam and sandy clay loam soils. The
amount of N leached was reduced with increased rate of application of polymer. The PAM effectively
decreased leaching losses and improves the quality of ground water. In addition, PAM has the potential to
reduce residual soil nitrate therefore, PAM may result in reduction in ground water contamination and
reduction in greenhouse emissions (nitrous oxide). PAM appears to be a good alternative for N use in
agricultural field. PAM had an important and significant inhibitory impact on downward vertical N
transport. PAM effectiveness increased with PAM application rate, and the highest rate of 0.5 % PAM was
most effective.
