Description During last three decades, India’s agriculture sector has been transformed from the traditional to modern practice through the effective deployment of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). ICT tools like telephone, mobile phone etc. is being used in dissemination of agricultural technology aiding in extending the fruits of research and development in agriculture to the farmers in a faster manner and at their doorstep. Looking into the advantages of mobile applications, Oil Palm Kisan Mobile Message Services (OPKiMMS) were started by ICAR-Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research during 2012 to disseminate oil palm production technology to the stakeholders (Mary Rani et.al.,2015). Through this service oil palm technologies are disseminated as text and voice messages to stakeholders of 13 states in four different languages. Feedback collected in the year 2013 revealed that technologies disseminated through mobile services are useful in adoption, farmers would like to receive the messages on weekly interval, and to have a toll free call back facility to contact the officers and scientists for oil palm cultivation and improve production (Prasad et. al., 2015). After a period of five years of implementing these services, feedback was collected again to know the impact of voice messages that were disseminated for adoption of oil palm technologies. Feed back collected from respondents was depicted in the article.
Oil Palm Kisan Mobile Message Services (OPKiMMS) were started by ICAR-Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research during 2012 to disseminate oil palm production technology to the stakeholders. Oil Palm technologies on planting, cultural practices, irrigation management, fertilizer & nutrient management, intercrops, pests & diseases management and harvesting were published as voice messages, 2255 contents were published to 52.63 lakh mobile numbers in four languages viz., English, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada to the stakeholders of 13 oil palm growing states during 2012-18. Feedback was collected through phone in survey from 32 respondents to know the impact of voice messages, using a structured and standardized questionnaire. Results revealed that 71.88 per cent of the respondents were receiving information related to their crop growth stage, 78.13 per cent stated that voice messages are useful than other sources and they are also interested in consulting scientists of IIOPR. Seventy five percent of the respondents informed that they require call back facility. Most of the respondents adopted the information given through voice messages on fertilizer management, precautions to be taken while growing intercrops, stem wet rot management, irrigation, nutrient deficiencies and weed management, pest & disease control, mulching and harvesting in that order. On other hand they requested to provide information on intercrops to be grown, fertigation, drip irrigation and technologies to increase yields through voice messages. Respondents informed that they were not willing to pay for the voice message services. Mobile message services through voice messages is an effective tool of ICT which is aiding farmers and stakeholders to attain knowledge on recommended practices to achieve good yields
