Coconut (Cocos nucifera), the most widely cultivated palm, is a native of the humid tropics and an important plantation crop of India. The CPCRI, Kasaragod, now holds the largest collection of 398 accessions, including 266 indigenous and 132 exotic accessions in field gene banks. Coconut exhibits diversity in forms, size, number and colour of fruits. The institute also hosts the International Coconut Gene Bank for South Asia under the umbrella of Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT), of the Bioversity International (formerly International Plant Genetic Resources Institute). Conservation and utilization of coconut biodiversity has resulted
in development of 32 improved varieties and contributed to improving coconut productivity.
