Photosynthesis, growth and development of three high yielding varieties namely Mangala, Sumangala and Sreemangala were studied during early years of crop growth. Mangala had significantly less set volume and maximum yield compared to all other varieties, without any difference in other growth or photosynthetic ch'racteristics. Mangala's early bearing and high yield seemed to have resulted in less stem volume due to partitioning of more photosynthates to flowering and fruiting during the early years of growth.
