Description Not Available
Sorghum grain (Sorghum bicolor) is one of the most suitable and commonly used nutrient rich substrate
for mushroom spawn production. Physical and engineering properties of sorghum grain at different stages of
spawn production viz., raw sorghum grain, boiled sorghum grain and mushroom spawn produced need to be found for understanding the variation in their properties for design and development of more efficient and robust spawn spreading machine for oyster mushroom cultivation. The properties viz., moisture content (db.), linear dimensions (major, medium and minor diameter), arithmetic mean and geometric mean diameter, sphericity, thousand seed weight, bulk density, angle of repose and coefficient of static friction (using plywood, galvanized iron (GI) and mild steel (MS) sheet) for raw sorghum grain, boiled sorghum grain and mushroom spawn were determined. The linear dimensions of samples were measured by using electronic microscope assisted with Q-capture software and other properties by following standard procedures. The moisture content (db.), major diameter, medium diameter, minor diameter, arithmetic mean diameter, geometric mean diameter, sphericity, thousand seed weight, bulk density, angle of repose and coefficient of static friction of plywood, galvanized iron (GI) and mild steel (MS) sheets were found to be 11.69±0.20, 45.72±2.27 and 42.80±2.47 %; 4.33±0.02, 3.82±0.02 and 2.32±0.01 mm; 5.07±0.03,4.70±0.04 and 3.57±0.02 mm; 5.11±0.06, 4.65±0.04 and 3.53±0.02 mm; 3.48±0.01, 4.45±0.02 and 4.43±0.04 mm; 3.09±0.01, 4.04±0.02 and 4.02±0.05 mm; 0.74±0.00, 0.79±0.00 and 0.79±0.00; 34.29±1.01, 53.81±2.61 and
44.10±1.93 g; 752.78±11.79, 657.39±6.70 and 620.43±17.41 kg m-3; 15.10±0.79, 24.05±0.35 and 24.04±0.49 degree and 0.40±0.01, 0.46±0.01 and 0.47±0.01; 0.41±0.02, 0.54±0.01 and 0.43±0.01; 0.59±0.01, 0.55±0.02 and 0.56±0.02 for raw sorghum grain, boiled sorghum and mushroom spawn, respectively. The determined physical and engineering properties were used in designing the hopper of spawn spreading machine.
