Agriculture in India occupies a prime position in terms of its contribution to gross domestic product and factor incomes. It accounts for 27 percent of India’s gross domestic product, 65 percent of the employment of the total workforce and 21 percent of the total exports of the country (Venkitaramanan, 2001). The sectoral shift has been less rapid and less pronounced than anticipated in more than 50 years of independence. Its population and poverty weigh down the Indian economy.
