Hot arid region of India endowed with rich plant diversity which occurs on a wide range of habitats. These highly specialized species are adapted to grow in harsh climatic conditions of this region with a great potential of economic and environmental importance. These highly adapted species have specific traits and are vital for mitigating anticipated adverse effects of climate change. Thediverse gene pool of these species offers a good scope for selection for tolerance to a wide range of abiotic stresses such as moisture deficit, salinity and temperature in harsh arid environment. Further, plant diversity of the hot arid region is under severe and consistent stress due to occurrence of frequent drought and irrational exploitation. There is an urgent need to create greater awareness amongst the inhabitants/farmers for their sustainable utilization and conservation of arid plant biodiversity in farming system perspective.
