Description An investigation was conducted to determine the noise level (under stationary condition) and noise at operator's ear level ofpopular 7.46 and 8.95 kW power tillers during field operations and in transport operation with a trailer attachment. The noise levels at operator's ear level were dependent on variables such as fonvard speed, teITain and type of power tiller. The noise levels increased with forward speed oftravel under all operating conditions. It was observed that the sound pressure levels of power tillers were more than the exposure limit of noise for 8-hr workday recommended by ISO and OSHA. This may cause health problems to the famlers in the long run. Improvenlent in design feature of muffler will reduce the vibration produced by airflow and periodic repair and maintenance of machine parts cut down the noise produced. Wearing 0f personal protective equipment like earmuffs and earplugs and altered work schedules are other alternatives to prevent noise related problem. This study indicated that steps should be taken to reduce the existing excessive noise levels of the power tiller.
