Smectites of some shrink- swell soils of Peninsular India have been reported to be hydroxy-interlayered. The presence of hydroxy-interlayered materials prevents determination of the actual layer charge of smectites by alkylammonium method. Standard method to remove hydroxy-interlayered materials was tried but did not yield the desired results. However, stripping of clay samples with 0.5N EDTA has been found to be effective in removing the hydroxy-interlayered materials for the determination of layer charge of soil smectites.
