A study was taken up to examine the economic impact of improved production practices on economics of smallholder dairying in Heggere village of Chitradurga district. By spending about Rs.5,000 on the interventions like use of mineral mixture, chaffed fodder, balanced feeding and proper health care, a farmer was able to get a net benefit of over Rs.17,000 per year. The detailed economic analysis of dairying has shown that the gross cost of maintaining a crossbred cow was over Rs.3900 per month, and the farmer was able to get a net return of Rs.1,745 per month. Better profitability of dairying coupled with assured marketing improved the livelihood security of the farmers.
