Description An experiment was conducted during 1988-91 to study the gene effects in interspecific crosses of indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czernj. & Cosson X ethiopian mustard (Brassica carinata A. Braun). Analysis of generation means using data of parental and first 3 filial generations in 4 interspecific crosses of B.juncea x B.carinata showed predominance of additive gene action for number of primary branches, secondary branches, length of main fruiting branch, number of siliquae on main axis, seeds/siliqua,1 000-seed weight and seed yield. Intermating of selected plants in early generation proved useful for improvement of seed fertility. But simple pedigree or mass selection was found desirable in later generation for isolation of desirable recombinants.
