Seven Jalauni sheep and seven Bundelkhandi goats were randomly divided into 2 groups. All animals were fed complete feed blocks consisting of mature grass, stylo straw and concentrate mixture in the ratio of 35:35:30 on DM basis. Intake, nutrient utilization, rumen fermentation and blood metabolites were compared under stall-feeding condition between sheep and goats. The bulk density of complete feed blocks was 450-500 kg/m3. DM intake was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in sheep (80.45 g/kgW0.75) than goats (68.30 g/kgwo.75). The digestibility coefficients of nutrients were similar between species. Both sheep and goats were in positive N balance. No species difference was observed in pH, rumen fermentation parameters and microbial population. Blood metabolites were within the normal physiological range. It was concluded that sheep consumed higher (P < 0.05) DM than goats when roughage based complete diet was given in the form of blocks. Nutrient utilization, rumen fermentation and blood metabolites were similar in both species. Not Available |
