Description A field investigation was carried out during 2001 and 2002 to study the crop response of pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica Roxb.) to irrigation frequencies based on IWICPE (IW 4 cm) ratio of 1.5 (I1), 1.2 (I2) and 0.9 (I3) adopted with different raised bed width, viz 1.0 m (W1), 1.5 m (W2) and 2.0 m (W3) planting system in a sandy loam soils (Aeric Haplaquept) of lower Indo-Gangetic plains. Water demand (ETJ from December to July was 67.8 cm. Irrigation treatments were imposed from January and continued up to May. Irrigation water amount over 2 growing seasons varied from 48- 56, 32 - 44 and 24 - 32 cm at I1, I2, and I3 respectively. Profile contribution was maximum (5.2 - 8.2 cm) from drier moisture regime I3. Crop received rainfall of 17.2 cm. Total field water supply was to the tune of 65.0,53.7 and 46.2 cm at I,, 1,and I, moisture regimes respectively. Crop at wetted moisture regime (I,) received 12-14 irrigation with an interval of 6-10 days. Raised bed planting system saved the irrigation water to the extent of 10,30 and 40 %with W1, W2,and W3, respectively. The highest fruit yield (4.75 to 8.20 tonnes/ha) was attained with the irrigation at IWICPE 1.5 (I,). Yield was significantly decreased (28.8 - 49.4 %)under I2 and I 3. The frequent water supply (I,) reduced the fruit size (37.3 g) marginally but increased the fruit number (16.4/m2) significantly. Water productivity under deficit irrigation (I,) was not improved (5.9 kg/m3) much over the wetted (6.8 kgl/m3" regime (I,) during summer months. Narrower bed width (W,) planting system gave maximum yield and higher water productivity (7.2 kg / m3water) over the wider beds (W2, and W3,).
