Crops grown on saline soils suffer on account of high osmotic stress, nutritional disorders and toxicities, poor soil physical conditions and ultimately, reduced crop productivity. The identification and utilization of plant-associated microorganisms, which confer tolerance to salinity stresses and promote plant growth, has received renewed attention worldwide because of the obvious advantages of low cost, less energy requirement and easy adaptability. In this study, halotolerant microbial isolates were screened for their plant growth promoting capabilities using biochemical and molecular tools. Twelve selected isolates were evaluated for their potential to enhance seed germination and growth of wheat plants, both under lab and pot conditions. The isolates, STB1, 15STB2C and STB32 were able to induce germination at a high salinity level of 240 mMNaCl and the strains increased the root length by 4-38% and shoot length by 166-233% at 60 mMNaCl. In pot conditions, STB32 inoculated wheat plants yielded significantly higher biomass. Considerable mobilization of soil phosphorus and micronutrients was also observed upon microbial inoculation.
