Description With the increase in human population and changes in
human life style, the amount of waste generated is so
enormous that it needs to be studied for its proper disposal
and its degradation. Vermicomposting is one of the
biotechnological techniques for decomposition of organic
waste material and converting it into beneficial end
products with the use of earthworms. During the process
of vermicomposting, the organic waste products are
fragmented by earthworms and increase its surface area
for the microbes to enhance the decomposition process
(Aira et al., 2002; Pramanik et al., 2009; Suthar, 2008;
Vivas et al., 2009). Moreover, vermicompost is a good
source of essential nutrients, vitamins, plant growth
promoting hormones etc (Prabha et al., 2007). But, after
the production of vermicompost, the physico-chemical
changes of the vermicompost with the storage duration at
room temperature are hardly been studied. It is
hypothesized that with the storage duration at room
temperature, quality of the vermicompost must change
due to many factors including growth of micro-organisms.
Therefore, this research was conducted to investigate
these changes and its effect to the quality of the
vermicompost.
Vermicompost is one of the economical inputs that have been used as a good source of nutrients as well as soil
amendment in improving soil health. It is hypothesized that with the ageing process of the produced vermicompost, there
might be few changes in physic-chemical properties of the vermicompost. These changes directly relates to the quality
and effectiveness of the vermicompost. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to investigate these changes. It was
found that significant changes occurred in moisture content, particle density, water holding capacity, electrical
conductivity, pH, total nitrogen content and total carbon content.
