The effects of shade nets on grape (cv. Tas-A-Ganesh) berry growth and quality were studied in Rahu, Pune, Maharashtra, India, during 2000-01. At the veraison stage, the bunches were covered with gunny cloth (6.0 or 7.0 oz), black shade net (50 or 75% cut), green net (75% cut) or paper. Black net with a 50% cut resulted in the greatest bunch weight (300.0 g). The weight of 50 berries was greatest for gunny cloth (6 oz) and paper cover (149.33 and 143.30 g, respectively). The highest total soluble solid content (20.53°Brix) and acidity (0.54%) were recorded for the control. The highest leaf chlorophyll a content was registered for black net with 75% cut (1.30 mg/g fresh weight). The highest scores of visual berry colour were obtained with back net with 75% cut (10.56) and 50% cut (10.80).
