Wilting of Bird-of-Paradise, Strelitzia reginae plants to the extent of 20 per cent was noticed at the ICAR - Indian Institute of Horticultural Research farm, Hessaraghatta, Bangalore, India. The diseased plants showed yellowing and complete drying of leaves with the base turning brown and complete wilting of the plants. The bacterial ooze when streaked on Tryphenyl Tetrazolium Chloride medium produced typical colonies of Ralstonia solanacearum. Pathogenicity was proved positive against potted seedlings of Bird-of-Paradise. Identity of the pathogen, was confirmed through molecular characterization using 16s rDNA. The sequence of the DNA matched with R. solanacearum with 99% identity when blasted at NCBI. The culture was deposited in the National Agriculturally Important Microbial Culture Collection at ICAR-NBAIM, Mau, India, with Accession Number, NAIMCC-B-01767 and the sequence deposited with NCBI with Accession No. KJ004030. This is the first report of bacterial wilt caused by R. solanacearum on Bird of Paradise from India.
