In a study, 20 genotypes of grape (Vitis spp) representing 3 categories, viz commercial cultivars, rootstocks and related species, were screened during 2000-2001 using drought-tolerant indices on 2-year-old plants maintained on their own roots. Low transpiration rate was recorded in cultivar 'Kishmish Chernyi', rootstocks 'SPC 4', 'Teleki 5A', '1613 C', '1103 P' and 'St. George'. High water potential was recorded in all the genotypes except rootstock '1613 C' and cultivar 'Concord'. Low gas flow rate was recorded in 'SO 4', 'Teleki 5A', '1103 P', 'Kishmish chernyi', 'St. George' and '1613 C'. 'Kishmish Chernyi', 'Teleki 5A', Vitis candicans Engelm, 'St. George', 'Muscat', '1103 P', '1613 C', '1616 C' showed the lowest stomatal conductance. High proline accumulation was noticed in V. longii W. Prince, 'Arka Shweta', 'Concord', 'de Grasset', 'Thompson Seedless', 'Muscat', 'SO 4', 'Dog Ridge', 'Amtsir', 'Ramsey' and 'Red Globe'. Thus '110 R', '1103 P', 'SO 4', 'Teleki 5A', '1613 C' and cultivar 'Kishmish Chernyi' were considered to be drought tolerant.
