Carp culture, a significant industry in India, can be further enhanced and optimized by improving the genetic worth of fish stocks through specific genetic manipulations. The paper reviews the status of the following studies in India: chromosome manipulations for achieving gynogenesis, polyploidy, gonadal sex manipulations, hybridization, production of faster growing stock through selection, cryopreservation of gametes, and gene cloning for production of transgenic superfishes .
