Small coral reefs of fringing type are found in the Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar
at the south-eastern coast of India. They are located chiefly around the various
islands lying between Tuticorin and Rameswaram in the Gulf of Mannar, and in
Palk Bay at Mandapam and along the eastern side of Rameswaram Island.
Early references to some of these reefs are made by Foote (1880) Thurston (1895)
and Sewell (1932,1935) who referred largely to the raised up reefs of the Rameswaram
Island. In this account an attempt is made to describe the structure of a
shallow-water reef at Mandapam (Palk Bay). The horizontal distribution of the
various corals on the reef is discussed in relation to a few possible factors that might
influence the distribution. This account is based on a study of the reef which was
visited as and when conditions permitted, for over a period of three years.
