Triclosan (TCS) is a synthetic biocide used in a wide range of personal care and pharmaceutical products. Due to extensive use and subsequent disposal, TCS is widely detected in different aquatic environment posing a severe ecotoxicological threat. The current study was designed to assess the occurrence of TCS in Versova creek of Mumbai, India and its toxicity on aquatic organisms. A decreasing gradient of TCS concentration from treated sewage discharge site (0.0145±0.0005mg L-1) towards the sea-creek interface (0.00103±0.00077 mg L-1) was observed in the water samples. Similarly, a gradient concentration from 0.38±0.14 to 0.00075±0.00025 mg kg-1 TCS was documented for sediment samples. Such decreasing concentration of the TCS is perceived as a result of dilution in water flow. The 96h LC50 of TCS forLitopenaeus vannamei (shrimp) and Oreochromis niloticus (fish) were estimated as 0.497 and 1.403 mg L-1. The EC50 of TCS for selected algae Isochrysis and Nanochloropsis were 2.15 and 2.07mg L-1, respectively. The study reveals a relatively higher concentration of TCS in the creek and provides baseline scientific information on the potential impact of TCS on aquatic organisms of different trophic levels. The findings suggest the need for controlled use and disposal of TCS in the environmental setting. Not Available |
