Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago in the Bay of Bengal, the densely wooded tropical islands is a unique biogeographic zone which hosts about 3000 taxa of Angiosperms, Gymnosperms, Pteridophytes, Bryophytes and Lichens within the geographical region of 8248 sq. km. The tropical rain forests of these Islands are remarkable with unique insular flora with several intraspecific variants and potentially useful plant genetic resources for agri-horticulture, phytopharmacology, etc. The medicinal plant diversity in the Island is also unique and represents a great emporium of ethnobotnaical wealth as it is an abode of six different aboriginal tribes viz., Nicobarese, Shompen, Jarawas, Sentinels, onges and Great Andamanese who uses this bioresource for their indigenous treatment etc. During the last few decades there has been a resurgence of interest on medicinal plants across the globe because of the existing demand for use in different health care systems or manufacture of various health care products. The rich medicinal plant wealth of the Island has to be conserved and exploited in a sustainable way as there is loss in the plant biodiversity of the Island due to various natural and anthropogenic factors. The ethnomedicinal wealth of the Island may also be translated to manufacture green medicines in future for curing various human ailments, as it is a well known fact that many drugs which are in commerce today have come from the insight of folk use and indigenous cultures. The establishment of herbal garden with different medicinal plants in home gardens and various institutions of the Island will be a major initiative step towards the conservation of medicinal plant genetic resource. This book is a compilation of the major medicinal plants with passport information regarding their status, distribution, common name, propagation technique and medicinal use of different species along with ethnobotanical information which may serve as a reference material to the Islanders, researchers and other stakeholders.
