Description An experiment was conducted during 2001-2004 to find out the pathotype virulence and diversity of Puccinia triticina Eriks on wheat in India Pathotypes 121 R63-1 and 21R55 of Puccinia triticina (brown rust of wheat) with virulence for Lrl, Lr3, Lr13, Lr16, Lr17, Lr23 and Lr26 were most common in 1954 brown rust samples analyzed from 16 states of India and parts of Nepal. In addition, pathotype l09R31-1, which has avirulence for L1"26, was most prevalent in eastern India and adjoining areas of north. The proportion of pathotype 21 R55 increased during this period. A new pathotype 253R31 from Kamataka state rendered L1"19 susceptible in India. International equivalents to these pathotypes were designated and Indian pathotype were found to be different to those of the United States of America and adjoining countries.
