Description Ten genotypes of horsegram were developed and tested during 200 1-04 at mid-altitudes of north-west Himalayas, to assess the contribution of various characters contributing towards yield as well as to identify stable genotypes. Seed yield was associated with pod length, plant height, seed filling period, days to flowering and maturity. Days to maturity and pod length were found to be most important characters for genetic improvement in horsegram. Emphasis need to be given for days to maturity which contributed both directly and indirectly towards seed yield. 'VL 16' and 'VL 30' were found superior to the check and also responsive to the favourable environnlental conditions.
