Pulicat or “Pazhavercaud” has a very ancient history dating back to 1336 when the Vijayanagar Kingdom was established (Krishnan et al., 2000). The quest for the spices of the east and lucrative textile trade in silk and cotton, inspired the Europeans to fi nd an alternative route to the Indian subcontinent of which the Spanish and Portuguese were the pioneers. A change in the trading stream along the Coromandel Coast was caused by the English who wanted to monopolize trade in that area. Not Available |
