Artificial insemination (AI) is a technique in which semen collected from the male is processed in the laboratory and deposited into female reproductive tract artificially with the catheter at appropriate time. Artificial insemination is widely adopted reproductive technique in breeding programmes for livestock improvement. The technology has been standardised for most of the domestic livestock species with species specific modifications. This is being widely used in cattle and buffalo in India. However, in pig, AI has not been exploited commercially despite its huge perceived benefits.
