ln Himachal Pradesh grassland i'paslures produce far below their potential and their carryng capacity is 1.5 ACU (Adult Cattle Unit with average body v/eight of 350 Kg). The total livestock populat in the state is 54, 32, 570 in which cattle (41%) constitute the major share followed by goats (22.0%). About 2339.63 thousand ha (41.0% of the total geographical area) in the staie ls avaliable for grazing/fodder production. The grazing pressure for the state has been found to be 1.26 ACU/ha. At present there is a gap of aboul 67% in terms of dry matter requirement for the livestock. Livestock population has been projected to 3411 thousand ACU and total dry matter requirements would be 29846.25 thousand t/annum.
