The toxic effects of indoxacarb on the visceral organs of cockerel and protective effect of Gandhpalasi (Hedychium spicatum) (HSRP) were evaluated. Cockerels were divided in seven groups comprising seven birds each group. Group I served as control and were given normal grower ration, group II was fed with indoxacarb (250ppm), group III served as silymarin (250ppm) control and group IV was fed indoxacarb @250ppm+silymarin @250ppm, group V fed Hedychium spicatum rhizome powder-HSRP@4000ppm, group VI (HSRP@2000ppm+indoxacarb@250ppm) and group VII (HSRP@ 4000ppm+indoxacarb@250ppm). The dose of indoxacarb was selected on the basis of LD50 in cockerels (250mg/kg). The experimental birds were kept in deep litter system of housing and maintained on grower ration. Birds were sacrificed after completion of 16 weeks feeding trial and gross and histopathology was performed. Histopathological examination of different organs in group II treated with indoxacarb showed congestion of large blood vessels, fibrosis around central vein, budding of arterioles around blood vessel in the fibrosed area of the liver, swelling and hemorrhages in the glomeruli and interstitial hemorrhages in between tubules, edema in between the cardiac muscle bundles, gliosis, change in shape of neurons, satellitosis and neuronophagia and necrosis and depletion of majority of spermatids from majority of the seminiferous tubules were seen. Histopathological changes were not observed in control group aswell as in group III and V but very mild to moderate in group IV, VI and VII. It is concluded that the HSRP produced protective effect in indoxacarb induced histological changes in WLH cockerels.
