Rainfall data for 37 years (1964 - 2000) recorded at the Meteorological Observatory of Ramie Research Station (26.5º N, 91º E), Sorbhog, Barpeta, Assam were analysed for annual, seasonal and monthly rainfall characteristics and its probability for lower Brahmaputra valley zone of Assam. The overall mean annual rainfall was 2972.8 mm, which was distributed as 2090.9 mm in kharif, 674.1 mm in summer (pre-kharif) and 207.8 mm in rabi season. The wettest month was July (651.3 mm) and lowest rainfall was recorded in December (8.8 mm). In 37 years (444 months) 64.6% months were normal in rainfall, 26.4% months were drought and the remaining 9% months were above normal. June month had highest probability (96%) of getting 250 mm of rainfall. This information is useful for timely ramie rhizome planting, planning of drainage system in ramie, timely land preparation and showing of wheat and rabi legumes namely lentil and lathyrus.
