Description |
The experiment was conducted to study the promising1 best tomato (Lycopersicon esculentzrm Mill) genotypes for growing in Lahaul valley. Large area of Himachal Pradesh state of India falls in trans-Himalayan zone which is a cold desert and considered as dust bowl where nothing can be grown during winters. Depending on the altitude cultivation can be taken up only during summer from ApriVMay to SeptemberIOctober (for a period of 5-6 months) leading to a greater scarcity of fresh vegetables. To overcome a part of the tempting demand 16 variable genotypes of tomato were studied for their adaptability to dry and temperate conditions for 3 years at experimentd farm of the Centre, Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh in a dry temperate zone of North Western Himalayas. Observations were recorded for productivity, earliness, abiotic resistance, total soluble solids and pericarp thickness. 'EC 129601' excelled the other genotypes in terms of production (101.42 tonnesha) and early maturity to marketable fruits at 85 days of transplantation when temperature ranged between 25.8 to 12.9 "C (average maximum and minimum temperature). In addition, the flowering in 'EC 129601 ' was induced from the lowest node 15-22 days after transplanting and there were more flowers per inflorescence. Congenial diurnal temperature (2 1-25 "C i 2 day; 14 "C nights) and prolonged duration of sunlight (12-14 hr) might have favoured genotype x environment interaction to enhance the performance of 'EC 129601'. Fruits of this peak performer when compared with other varieties had higher total solubl.~ solids (6.47) making them suitable for canning and processing purpose. Its pericarp was also thick indicating that if required can be transported to long distances. A11 in all, cultivation of 'EC 129601 ' has been recommended not only to help in nutritional security but also to augment the economy of the people living in dry temperate zone.
