Description |
Pigface breams belong to the family Lethrinidae. They are tropical marine perciforms found entirely in the Indo-Pacific, except one species that occurs only in the eastern Atlantic. They belong to the suborder Percoidei, a diverse group containing many families whose relationships are poorly understood. Lethrinids are included under the superfamily Sparoidea, which also contains the families Sparidae (porgies), Centracanthidae and Nemipteridae (threadfin bream). Among percoids, sparoicis appear most closely related to the Lutjanoidea (includes the snappers or Lutjanidae and, fusiliers or Caesionidae) and the Haemuloidea (includes the grunts or Haemulidae and Inermiidae). There has been much confusion concerning the familial allocation of the genera and species amongst these groups. |
