Description Fifty strains of coagulase.positive Staphylococcus aureus, procured from milk samples of cows and buffaloes and with a history of clinical and subclinical cases of mastitis, were subjected to bacteriophage typing using international basic setas well as basic bovine set of phages. Phage typing with thce international basic human set showed that 10 (20%) strains were typcuble. With the basic bovine set of phages 17 (34%) were typeable. of the 50 strains typed with the international basic set, 1(2%) belonged to group 1/3NA,2(4%) to group 3,6 (12%) to group 3/NA and 1(2%) to group NA. Based on the analysis of results using basic bovine set of phages the distribution of the 17 typcable strains out of the total 50 strains was 1(2%) in group 2,3 (6%) in.group 3,4 (8%) in group 4, 1(2%) each in groups 3 and 4, 1(2%) each in group 3,1 and miscellaneous, 7 (14%) in group 4, and miscellaneous in order of frequency. AnalySis of the so isolates of Staph. aureus with international basic set of phages and basic set of phages revealed 8 phage lytic pattems.
