Description |
A simple liquid chromatographic method was developed for the estimation of volatile fatty acids in ruminal fluid. The procedure involved clarification of the fluid with stannous chloride and estimation of acetic, propionic and butyric acids by HPLC using a reversed-phase column, phosphate buffer pH 2.5 eluent and UV spectrophotometric detector. The overall recovery was found to be 84.55± 7.10% for acetic acid, 70.55±0.65 % tor propionic acid and 88.46±2.98% for butyric acid. A minimum of 1.4 mM acetic acid and 0.56 mM each of propionic and butyric acids could be estimated by the method.
