Description Participatory learning and action (PLA): The first steps towards change

This training video targets researchers, extension workers and farmers in the South Pacific. The video, which lasts approximately 25 minutes, is accompanied by a brochure that provides summary information on the background and objectives to the PLA project that was carried out in Vanuatu. The aim is that this training set should assist target groups in the South Pacific by stimulating discussion, and that it will also facilitate the training of more staff in the use and adoption of such participatory methods and approaches.

Produced by Project 11 'Agricultural Rural Development' of the Pacific Regional Agricultural Programme (PRAP), the video and brochure are available free-of-charge to institutions and organizations in the eight Lomé convention partner countries in the South Pacific.

Fulfilling the promise is a 38-minute video from the Sasakawa Africa Association which examines the development of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) against a background of serious problems of malnutrition in Africa.

QPM has been bred to be nutritionally superior to normal maize, with protein quality almost as good as skimmed milk. The film explores the promise it holds for improved nutrition in the maize dependant communities in developing countries. The programme looks at a village in Ghana where QPM, together with a package of improved agricultural inputs, was introduced three years ago resulting in a marked improvement in child nutrition and health.

Breaking the mould is a 30minute video that considers strategies, now being implemented in Ghana and other African countries, to bring African universities into the development process. The target is to accelerate the adoption of superior agricultural technologies by Africa's farmers by upgrading the skills of outstanding mid-career extensionists to BSc level.
