Description This is the sub-title of one of the fourteen papers published collectively m Development and Social Change in the Pacific Islands.

The special problems of their small size, their immense distance from major centres and, for many, their poor agricultural possibilities, make development in the Pacific Islands extremely difficult. However recent entitlements by island states to vast areas of sea and seabed, and the new developments in extractive marine technology, have focussed attention on marine resource opportunities including artisanal, commercial and recreational fishing; aquaculture; mariculture; chemical, mineral and energy extraction; new port developments; ship repairs; processing and marketing.

The new maritime geography of the Pacific imposes planning' management and educational tasks on the Pacific Island governments of considerable complexity, which require clear objectives with respect to existing patterns of sea uses, ways of life, and the future economic and social costs and benefits on coastal communities.

The book is introduced and edited by A D Couper, Professor at the Department of Maritime Studies, UWIST, Wales and the World Maritime University, Sweden and includes an extensive bibliography.
