Pesticides will long remain an essential weapon within a framework of integrated crop protection, the objective being to keep pest populations at acceptable levels by using the techniques compatible with a given ecosystem. However, some hold risks for man and the fauna and flora. The least harmful and most effective products are often imported: this increases costs. Some may be prepared and packaged for informal trade channels with no guarantees for users' hearth. Food crop protection in West and Central Africa is a manual which is intended not so much for farmer end-users as agricultural advisers of all kinds, such as extension workers, producers' groups, development and state companies and all those involved in the marketing of phytopharmaceutical products. The manual provides general observations on products, toxicity, regulations and precautions for use which is followed by a section on the choice of active ingredients (a.i.) recommended for specific crop-health problems. The commercial products which contain the a.i. in question, the companies which manufacture, formulate or distribute them and services which control these activities are all included. Indexes allow cross-referencing so that a crop, pest or product can be looked up and related to the relevant subject. The layout is clear and convenient with rapid access to information by using tables of active ingredients and product sheets. A more rapid, overall view of the data concerning risks and precautions to be taken during use of a product is provided by pictograms, most of which have been used by international institutions in the sector, and some of which have been especially designed for this manual. The manual may also be a source of general information for national registration committees, where they exist, and for departments responsible for plant protection regulations elsewhere.
