Description In this report we review the concepts behind the Four Cell Method (FCM), its development over the years and its application in a center of origin and domestication for potato and tubers, involving >100 farmers in ≈30 communities and including >128 farmer recognized crop varieties in 4 Andean regions of Peru. As part of this process a guide in Spanish, which could also be used as a facilitator training protocol, was developed, along with associated consent, confidentiality and post-workshop participatory evaluation forms. As a result of the application of FCM in Peru in 2019 and 2021, from a portfolio of >700 varieties across 7 native crops, 104 were identified as rare and used to guide the implementation of an incentive mechanism to motivate the in situ on farm conservation and use of genetic resources with high public values by farmers under a Payments for Agrobiodiversity Conservation Services (PACS) approach.
