Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) is an economically important high-value food fish of delicacy and flavoured white meat. The species is widely farmed across the globe. The worldwide production is reported to be 2,35,537 tonnes in 2018 valued at US$1.16 billion. Turkey and Greece are major producers contributing 69% of world production. India produces 6000-8000 tons of seabass in the open sea/estuarine cages in the coastal areas worth INR 2 billion. Asian seabass is a potential candidate fish species for aquafarming in India due to its fast growth, tolerance to a wide range of ecological settings, availabiliy of Hatchery produced seed, and scientifically formulated cost effective feed and demand in both domestic and export markets. Mass production of seabass in captivity through induced breeding practices, larval and nursery rearing techniques have been standarized under Indian conditions at the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) Chennai.
