The fisheries and aquaculture sector provides an important source of food and
nutritional security and livelihood for millions of people around the world. The
complementarity and interdependence among women and men are essential for the
sustenance of the sector. The roles and responsibilities associated with gender differ
from society to society, location to location based on the level of technology on one
hand, and the existing socio-cultural value systems on the other. However, their
participation and contribution are increasing day by day starting from labourers to
entrepreneurs, research, development and education. Fisheries science is younger
when compared to its siblings Agriculture and Veterinary science. Fisheries universities
and colleges have been opened in recent years and in the coming years more and more
women policymakers will contribute and make the empowerment of women in this
sector more visible.
