Description Fresh or canned, pineapples are one of the most widely appreciated fruits in the world. The lack of an adequate handbook on their cultivation and marketing was thus surprising. A recent publication entitled 'The Pineapple: Cultivation and Uses' fills this gap. Three food production and processing specialists have prepared a comprehensive study suitable for a wide range of professionals, including researchers, teachers, students, developers, economists, farmers and processing engineers.

The handbook is divided into four parts: the first part introduces the general features of the plant including pineapple biology, ecology, pests and diseases. The second part focusses on the operational aspects of pineapple cultivation, disease control and storage. The last two parts provide an overview of possible uses and the processing technology that is involved. The book also discusses the problems of international marketing. Such information on the many details of pineapple production, including social and economic factors, should enable growers to improve the sustainable production of this crop.
