Description |
Many people believe that traditional agricultural methods were appropriate in the past but that population growth, changing aspirations and technological developments now require a completely different approach. They advocate that such systems be replaced by agricultural production relying on modern technology Unfortunately, the reality of small farming households is more complicated. Many farmers are unable to profit from modern science and technology due to financial constraints and differing ecological conditions. This analysis led the Informationcentre for Low External Input Agriculture (ILEIA) to publish an extensively illustrated book entitled: 'Understanding Traditional Agriculture'. it is designed to help reorient development agencies and workers on traditional agricultural systems in the hope of providing many small farmers in the tropics with a better basis from which to develop sustainable agriculture, stressing the complementarity of traditional knowledge and modern technoloqical developments.
