Description Report of the mid term meeting of the CGIAR, held at the FAO in Rome from May 23-25, 1984, S. Shahid Husain presiding. FAO Director General Edouard Saouma opened the proceedings. Professor Camus, who had accepted a second three year term as Chairman of TAC, reported on TAC 33, in particular on the progress of TAC's studies of research priorities and training, and CIMMYT's plans for long term conservation of maize germplasm. The chairs of the center board chairmen and the center directors committee also reported.The Group welcomed the agreement, negotiated under TAC auspices, between CIMMYT and IITA on their respective responsibilities for maize research in Africa. The external program and management reviews of IITA were presented and discussed. The Director General of IITA reported on the progress of the center's campaign for the biological control of cassava pests in Africa.The Group considered the external program and management reviews of WARDA. It agreed to continue support, conditional on the implementation of the recommendations of the reviews. The CGIAR elected seven members to the expanded Scientific and Technical Committee of WARDA, and endorsed the plans made by TAC and the CGIAR Secretariat to monitor progress in implementation of the changes proposed.The Director of the Impact Study reported on progress. An FAO representative described arrangements being made to ensure effective participation of the countries selected to represent the five FAO regions in the CGIAR. The Group heard reports on the actions of FAO related to plant genetic resources from both FAO and the IBPGR. It asked TAC to clarify the meaning of placing a collection "under the auspices of FAO" as specified in Article 7(a) of the undertaking, and various aspects of the relationship between FAO, the new Commission on Plant Genetic Resources, and the IBPGR.
