Description A field experiment was conducted during early rainy season (kharif) of 1989 and 1990 to study the effect of preceding crop and crop combinations and N levels on growth and nutrient uptake of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Rice sown after sole blackgram (Phasenlus mungo L.l had tallest plant (94.8 cm), higher dry matter( 1.26 kg/m2) and leaf-area index (1.87) than when sown after early rainy-season or aus(March-April)rice and maize (Zea mays L.) alone. N content in rice plant at all the growth stages was significantly higher when it was followed by blackgram as sole and intercrop with maize. Similartrcnd was noticed for nutrient content in g.rain and straw and nutrient uptake. An increase in N level increased the plant height, dry matter, leaf-area index and nutrient uptake. The grain yield of rice was significantly highest when the crop was grown after sole blackgram.
