Description |
Part IV of a study of the impact of the CGIAR System on agricultural production and agricultural research institutions in developing countries, directed by Jock R. Anderson. This part is entitled 'Issues.' It begins by addressing germplasm exploration, collection, evaluation, and enhancement at the IARCs. There follow a broad overview of CGIAR crop protection research and activities, the urgent issue of suitable tropical land development, and the need for long term attention to the sustainability of tropical soils. Environmental classification for research targeting, the spread of research findings among farmers on the ground, farming systems research and the impacts and promises of agricultural mechanization are addressed. The final chapter discusses innovations in the CGIAR's pipeline in terms of their likely rate of adoption and anticipated economic impacts Agenda document at TAC 38 in October 1985. The impact study was the subject of a two day seminar at International Centers Week in October-November 1985. A summary overview was published by the CGIAR Secretariat in September 1985, and a book entitled Science and Food: The CGIAR and its Partners, based on the study, was published by the World Bank in 1988.
