Description Pig rearing in NEH region is confined to small-scale practice and for household consumption only. The tribal population of this region mostly being non-vegetarian in food habit, demand for all kinds of meal is very high in this region. Among the available meats, pork is the most preferred one in the entire region. But this region is not able to produce the required arpount of pork and other meat due to non-availability and non-adoption of commercial production practices. This is an accountability inherent problem like non-availability of improved breed, lack of health care facilities, traditional, and unscientific rearing practices etc. Astudy conducted among 250 randomly selected pig rearers from 5 states of north eastern region indicated that the farmers (rearers) are forced to stick to the existing pig rearing practices because of lack of alternatives to go for scientific and commercial rearing practices.
