Description |
"Survey and routine Monitoring of ASKAP's RFI environment and Trends" (SMART) is an Observatory Project combining the automated ingest and analysis of RFI-affected data from routine ASKAP observations with a comprehensive RFI survey. The survey parameters are such that a complete epoch of the survey should take of order one week. This project makes use of five system tunings covering ASKAP's full frequency range, including portions of the bandwidth that are not typically used in survey science observing. Each tuning consists of observations taken over a 24-hour period in order to capture a snapshot of the RFI environment of ASKAP, with regular epochs planned to monitor changes and trends. SMART provides a unique opportunity to study the RFI environment between 700-1800 MHz at Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara, the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, and investigate the effects of RFI on ASKAP science. The project will involve understanding and updating the default flagging behaviour, inferring the suitability of RFI monitoring equipment by cross-correlating with visibilities, monitoring spectrum management compliance and informing the implementation of a suite of RFI mitigation techniques.
