Description |
We propose to carry out broadband follow-up observations of two new pulsars discovered in the ongoing SMART pulsar survey. PSR J1357-2530 is actually a re-discovery, but was originally reported in the literature with an incorrect name and discrepant dispersion measure, and no accurate position or timing solution available. PSR J0452-3418 is a new discovery from the SMART survey, with a spin period of 1.665 s and dispersion measure of $19.6\,pc\,cm^{-3}$. PSR J1357-2530 likely belongs to the rare class of low-luminosity, steep-spectrum pulsars; a class of pulsars that make up ~2% of the currently-known population of long-period pulsars. As such, understanding their emission and spectral properties is vital for developing a more comprehensive picture of the Galactic population of pulsars, and to make meaningful forecasts for the detectable population of pulsars in future low-frequency surveys, including those planned with SKA-Low. Follow-up of both pulsars is under way, using MWA archival data and targeted observations with the uGMRT (300-750 MHz). Parkes (Murriyang) observations will enable us to extend the frequency coverage to GHz frequencies, allowing us to investigate their pulse profile structure and single-pulse phenomenology in detail, including their frequency dependence.
