Description |
TAC report on its initial consideration of climate change issues as they relate to the CGIAR. It described the recent expansion of climate-related research, and current strategies to adapt to changes and mitigate their results.Despite uncertainties, and an inability to predict the impacts of climate change on food production by region or ecosystem, CGIAR research was well-suited to identifying varieties that would help poor people cope with a range of effects. This could be important in limiting the vulnerability of the poor. The report also noted the significance of CGIAR benchmark data on production environments to the research requirements of organizations working on climate change. Given the volume of resources being devoted to the subject by others, TAC did not recommend a diversion of CGIAR resources away from existing activities. It suggested holding a workshop to ascertain the current state of knowledge and identify arenas where the CGIAR could complement other climate change research.TAC considered this subject at its 76th and 77th meetings. Agenda document, CGIAR meeting in October 1999.
