Description |
Detailed proposal for a CGIAR-sponsored aquaculture research network prepared by consultant Clarence Idyll for consideration at TAC 42, and revised for TAC 44 and TAC 45. ICLARM is proposed as the network's core administrative facility and coordinating agency. Two principal research units are suggested: one devoted to fish pond production systems at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, and one devoted to genetic research at the University of the Philippines, Los BaƱos.The author describes views on the network expressed to him by authorities in several Asian countries, and provides an inventory of aquaculture research and regional and international fishery organizations. He sets out the network's proposed organizational structure, and discusses alternative structures. Priorities are identified in terms of both species and areas of research. Annexes include estimated costs of establishing and running the network, a proposed five year program, an overview of the status of aquaculture in Africa, and a suggested course of action for aquaculture research in Africa.
