Description |
Text of the King Baudouin Award presented to WARDA at CGIAR International Centers Week in October 2000. This decision was made by TAC at its 79th Meeting the previous month. The award recognized WARDA's breakthrough in the development of high-yielding, disease resistant, and drought tolerant upland rice varieties suitable to growing conditions in West and Central Africa. These varieties, called New Rice for Africa (NERICAs) was the result of successful hybridization of African and Asian species of rice. This award is normally found in the report of the TAC meeting, or the CGIAR meeting where action was taken, but in those case was omitted from both.
